Pre-wedding photographs — what Chinese couples call 婚纱照 — are among the most planned shoots we do in Japan. The hard part is not finding somewhere beautiful: a Kyoto lane, a Fuji lake, Hokkaido snow and an Okinawa beach all qualify. The hard part is fitting the season, venue permissions, outfit changes, hair and make-up and the weather into one morning, ahead of the crowds. This guide follows the order we plan in: season and place first, then the gown and suit, hair and make-up, permissions, the shape of the day, the weather backup, prices and how to book.

> The short version: choose the season before the city, apply to temples and shrines at least a month ahead, start at sunrise and have the main frames by 10 am, and keep a spare day for Fuji or the beach. Our pre-wedding photoshoot starts at $800 and the pre-wedding film at $1,200.

## Choosing by season

| Season | Where | What you get | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Spring (late March–mid April) | Kyoto, Tokyo, Kawaguchiko | Blossom, old lanes, Fuji over the lake | The busiest weeks; bloom dates move |
| Early summer (May–June) | Kyoto, Hakone, Hokkaido | Fresh green maples, fewer people | Rainy season from June on Honshu |
| Summer (July–August) | Hokkaido, Okinawa | Flower fields, sky, sea | Okinawa typhoons; humid Honshu |
| Autumn (October–early December) | Kyoto, Fuji, Nikko | Maples, first snow on Fuji | Kyoto is fullest in late November |
| Winter (December–February) | Hokkaido, Fuji, Kanazawa | Snow, Fuji at its clearest | Short days, cold, keeping warm in a gown |

### Kyoto: lanes and temples

Kyoto is for couples who want Japan to be unmistakable: Ninenzaka and the Yasaka Pagoda, the Shirakawa canal and Tatsumi Bridge in Gion, the bamboo and the Togetsukyo bridge in Arashiyama. Between sunrise and 8 am the lanes are almost empty; after 10 they rarely are. Since 2024 photography has been banned on Gion's private lanes around Hanamikoji, so we shoot on public streets. See [pre-wedding in Gion](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding/gion) and [Kyoto](https://www.komorebis.cc/destinations/kyoto).

### Fuji and Kawaguchiko: the lake and the snowcap

For Fuji behind you, mornings from December to February are clearest; snow settles on the summit from late October; in summer, haze often hides the mountain all day. The north shore of Lake Kawaguchi puts the water and the mountain in one frame, with blossom in mid-April and the Momiji Corridor in November. See [pre-wedding at Fuji](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding/mount-fuji) and the [Fuji pre-wedding film](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding-film/mount-fuji).

### Hokkaido: snowfields and flower fields

From December to March Hokkaido has real snow — the open country around Biei and Furano, the Otaru canal on a winter evening — and in July, the lavender fields of Furano. The fields are private farmland and must never be entered: the famous Tree of Philosophy in Biei was cut down by its owner in 2020 after years of trespass. We shoot from roadsides, public land and places where we have consent. In December the sun sets in Sapporo at about 4 pm, so the day is planned short. See [pre-wedding in Hokkaido](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding/hokkaido).

### Okinawa: beaches and chapels

The sea is at its best colour from April to October, but May and June are the rainy season and July to October the typhoon season, so a beach shoot needs a spare day. Many beaches belong to hotels and need their consent; Okinawa is also one of the few places in Japan where drone shots can be legal, away from Naha, the airports and the US bases. See [pre-wedding in Okinawa](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding/okinawa).

### Tokyo: city and old town

Tokyo suits couples who want a city feel with a kimono set on the side: Kaminarimon and the Sumida River in Asakusa, Ginza's architecture and the red-brick Tokyo Station, the Chidorigafuchi moat in blossom. See [pre-wedding in Asakusa](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding/asakusa) and [pre-wedding in Ginza](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding/ginza). Miyajima's torii in the sea, best at high tide, is another favourite; see [pre-wedding in Miyajima](https://www.komorebis.cc/services/pre-wedding/miyajima).

## The gown and the suit

**Bringing your own gown** is the most common choice.

- Choose a train you can lift: shrine approaches are gravel, Kyoto lanes are stone steps, Hokkaido is snow.
- Carry it on board in a garment bag, or check it in a hard case. Many airlines accept a wedding dress as cabin baggage, but check their size rules first.
- Hang it as soon as you reach the hotel and steam out the creases; ask the hotel whether it can lend a steamer.
- Pack flat shoes for walking between frames.

**Renting a gown**: Tokyo and Kyoto have rental studios with fittings. In sakura and autumn season, book the fitting before you book flights.

**The suit** travels in a suit bag. In winter, thermal underwear goes under the suit, and adhesive heat pads — sold in every convenience store as kairo — can be placed where the gown hides them.

**Kimono**: a kimono set is a popular addition. Our kimono rental add-on is $55 per person with dressing; formal bridal kimono such as shiromuku or iro-uchikake come from specialist bridal studios and are priced and booked separately.

## Hair and make-up

Our hair and make-up add-on is $100: an artist at your hotel before the shoot, with touch-ups on location. A sunrise shoot means starting make-up around 4 am, so lay everything out the night before. Send reference photos in advance; Japanese and Chinese bridal make-up styles differ, and agreeing on the look beforehand saves time on the morning. For Mandarin throughout the day — directing poses, talking to venues and rental studios — add a Mandarin-speaking assistant for $70.

## Permissions: what needs an application

- **Shrines and temples**: some accept pre-wedding shoots with an application weeks ahead and a fee; some refuse; almost none allow it inside the halls. Some welcome kimono but refuse a white gown.
- **Gardens**: Shinjuku Gyoen requires a permit for wedding photography, and Kenrokuen requires an application for commercial photography.
- **Public streets**: generally no permit, as long as you do not block the way or hold a spot for long.
- **Hotels, ryokan and chapels**: their own rules, usually with a booking and a venue fee.
- **Private farmland and homes**: never without the owner's consent.

We confirm every venue's rules when booking and build the day only around the venues that agree. Where a venue charges a fee, it is listed separately when we confirm the plan.

## A typical day in Kyoto

| Time | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| 4:30 | Hair and make-up at the hotel |
| 6:00 | Ninenzaka and the Yasaka Pagoda, first gown (the base 30 minutes) |
| 6:30 | Extra time: around Yasaka Shrine and the Shirakawa canal |
| 7:15 | Extra time: change (second look: kimono or casual) |
| 7:45 | Extra time: Tatsumi Bridge and Gion's public streets |
| 8:30 | Finish, as the visitors arrive |

The base 30 minutes covers one place in one outfit; the full route above is the base plus two extra hours ($800 + 2 × $150 = from $1,100). Outfit changes need extra time, and we arrange the place to change in advance. A Fuji day runs the other way round: we watch the weather, reach the lake before sunrise, take the frames with the mountain the moment it shows, and do everything else after.

## Weather backup

- **Fuji**: always keep a spare day. If the mountain is hidden, we shoot the frames that do not need it and try again the next morning.
- **Beaches**: Okinawa's typhoon season and Hokkaido's windy afternoons both call for a spare day.
- **Rain**: clear umbrellas, wet stone paving and temple eaves photograph well, but silk does not like rain — bring a cover.
- **Moving the date**: if the day truly cannot go ahead, we look for another slot during your stay.

## How to book

1. Send us your dates, cities, the seasonal look you want, the number of outfits and reference photos — on WeChat if you use it, or through the [booking page](https://www.komorebis.cc/book).
2. We reply with a plan based on the season and the venue rules, showing which venues need applications and what they cost.
3. Once you confirm, we file the applications. Temples and shrines need at least a month; in sakura and autumn season, the earlier the better.
4. A week before, we confirm the weather and the final route; the day before, the meeting time and place.

## Details couples tend to miss

- **Put the shoot early in your trip.** If it rains or Fuji stays hidden, there are days left to move to.
- **Sleep before a sunrise start.** The time difference from China is only one hour, but a 4 am alarm is still a 4 am alarm; skip the late dinner and long transfers the night before.
- **Accessories and nails.** Bring your own veil, earrings and bouquet holder; fresh flowers can be ordered from a local florist, ahead of time in sakura and autumn season. Have nails done before you fly.
- **Delivery.** The photo gallery arrives within 7 days and the film within 4 weeks. Express 24-hour delivery of the photos is $80.
- **Cash.** Some temples and gardens take only cash for entry and photography fees, so carry yen.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a pre-wedding photoshoot in Japan cost?

Our pre-wedding photoshoot starts at $800 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos, with extra hours at $150; the pre-wedding film starts at $1,200. Hair and make-up ($100), kimono rental ($55 per person) and venue fees where charged are extra.

### Which season is best for pre-wedding photos in Japan?

Sakura in late March to early April and the maples from mid-November are the most popular but the most crowded. For Fuji, December to February mornings are clearest; for snow, Hokkaido from December to March.

### Can we wear a wedding gown at a Japanese shrine or temple?

Some allow it with an application weeks ahead and a fee, some refuse, and some accept kimono but not a white gown. We confirm each venue’s rules and plan only around those that agree.

### Should we bring our own gown or rent one in Japan?

Either works. Bring one with a train you can lift, carried on board in a garment bag if your airline allows it. Rental studios in Tokyo and Kyoto offer fittings; book them early in sakura and autumn season.

### How do we book, and can we use WeChat?

Yes. Send your dates, cities, outfits and reference photos on WeChat or through the booking page. We reply with a plan, then file venue applications — at least a month ahead for temples and shrines.
