# Kyoto

> Kyoto rewards the early start more than anywhere in Japan: the temples that open at six are empty for an hour, and by nine the same lanes are a queue.

The city has some 1,600 temples and 400 shrines, but a shoot works with very few of them, chosen by the clock. Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6 am and its wooden stage is the first light in Higashiyama; Kinkaku-ji opens at 9 and is best on a clear morning when the gold pavilion reflects in the pond; the Philosopher’s Path and the Kamo River are free and open at any hour. The base 30-minute session covers one ticketed temple at opening time; an extra hour adds a walk through the lanes nearby, and either way it is finished before the tour buses arrive at around ten.

Kyoto is also strict, and honest planning starts there. Most temples forbid tripods, many forbid photography inside halls, and pre-wedding shoots usually need a written application and sometimes a fee — we confirm each venue’s rules when you book. Drones are effectively off the table in the city: central Kyoto is a densely inhabited district, city parks ban flights, and temples refuse them. Aerial work is possible only on private land, such as a ryokan or venue on the outskirts, with the owner’s consent and an MLIT approval filed about ten business days ahead.

## When to go

Autumn is Kyoto’s main season: maples colour from mid-November and peak from about the 20th into early December, and that fortnight is the busiest of the year — book by summer. Cherry blossom peaks in late March to early April. Snow falls on a few mornings in January and February and has usually melted by noon, so it is a bonus rather than a booking. June brings the rainy season and fresh green maples; July and August are hot and humid, with the Gion Matsuri filling the centre through July.

- **Cherry blossom**: Late March to early April
- **Autumn leaves**: Mid-November to early December, peak around 20 November–1 December

## Getting there

Kyoto Station is 2 hours 15 minutes from Tokyo on the Nozomi shinkansen and about 75 minutes from Kansai Airport on the JR Haruka express. From Osaka it is 15 minutes by shinkansen, 30 by JR Special Rapid, or 45 by the Hankyu line to Kawaramachi.

## Kimono

Kyoto has more kimono rental shops than any other Japanese city, clustered in three places: around Kiyomizu-dera and Gion, around Kyoto Station, and in Arashiyama. Basic plans include dressing, and most expect the kimono back by 5–6 pm, with next-day return available for a surcharge. Most shops open at 9 am, so dawn sessions need a studio with early dressing, which we book near the shoot through the kimono add-on ($55 per person); a dresser at your hotel is quoted separately on request.

## Rules on location

Tripods are refused at most temples and shrines, and photography inside halls is often banned. Keep off moss and raked gravel, do not sit on temple steps or walls, and bow at the gate. Pre-wedding and commercial shoots at temples usually need advance written permission. Never photograph geiko or maiko without consent, and respect Gion’s ban on photography in its private lanes. City buses are crowded; we move between locations by taxi or train.

## Drone

Only on private land or at a venue, with an MLIT application filed ten or more business days ahead.

## Photo spots

### Kiyomizu-dera

- Coordinates: 34.9949, 135.785
- Best time: 6–7:30 am
- Access and permits: About ¥500; opens at 6 am. No tripods; pre-wedding shoots need the temple’s prior approval

The wooden stage of the main hall juts 13 metres over the hillside on a lattice of pillars. The frame everyone wants is from the Okunoin terrace across the valley, with the stage and the city behind; at opening time it is possible without a crowd.

- **Mid-November–early December**: The valley below the stage turns red; the special night viewing lights it after dark, with long queues.
- **Late March–early April**: About 1,500 cherry trees around the hall; the east-facing slope is lit first, so arrive at six.

### Kinkaku-ji

- Coordinates: 35.0394, 135.7292
- Best time: 9 am opening, on a still, clear morning
- Access and permits: ¥500; 9 am–5 pm. One-way route, no tripods, no stopping on the path for long

The gold-leafed pavilion on Kyoko-chi pond, seen from a fixed viewing area on the south bank. Space is tight and the route moves on, so we plan a few quick frames rather than a styled session here.

- **January–February**: On the rare snow morning the roof turns white over the gold; go at opening, before it melts.
- **Year round**: The pavilion faces south, so it is front-lit all morning; wind on the pond breaks the reflection.

### Tofuku-ji

- Coordinates: 34.9767, 135.7739
- Best time: 8:30 am opening in November
- Access and permits: Tsutenkyo bridge and Kaisando about ¥1,000 in autumn. Photography is banned on the bridge itself during the November peak; shoot from Gaun-kyo bridge instead

A Zen temple whose wooden Tsutenkyo bridge crosses a ravine of some 2,000 maples. It is the most intense autumn frame in Kyoto and so crowded in late November that the temple stops people photographing on the bridge.

### Philosopher’s Path

- Coordinates: 35.0228, 135.7944
- Best time: 7–9 am
- Access and permits: Free; residential area — keep voices down and do not use the small bridges to private homes as sets

A two-kilometre stone path beside a canal between Ginkaku-ji and the Nanzen-ji area, lined with cherries that arch over the water. It is flat and easy in kimono, and the far end near Nanzen-ji is quieter than the Ginkaku-ji end.

### Kamo River at Sanjo and Shijo

- Coordinates: 35.0083, 135.7717
- Best time: Sunset to blue hour
- Access and permits: Free public riverbank

The broad river through the centre, with stepping stones further north and the Pontocho restaurants on the west bank. From May to September their wooden yuka platforms are lit over the water, and couples sit evenly spaced along the bank at dusk.

## Districts

- [Gion](https://www.komorebis.cc/destinations/gion.md) — Gion is shot at dawn and on public streets only: since 2024 its private lanes carry a ¥10,000 photography-fine sign, and the stone slopes up to the Yasaka Pagoda are only empty before seven.
- [Arashiyama](https://www.komorebis.cc/destinations/arashiyama.md) — Arashiyama’s bamboo grove is a 400-metre path that holds a few dozen people before it looks full — so the shoot is timed to the first train, not the sunrise.
- [Fushimi Inari](https://www.komorebis.cc/destinations/fushimi-inari.md) — Fushimi Inari never closes and charges nothing, so the empty torii tunnel belongs to whoever is on the mountain first — usually before eight.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can we have a pre-wedding shoot inside a Kyoto temple?

Sometimes, with permission. Some temples accept written applications and charge a fee, others refuse outright, and rules change by season. We apply when you book and build the session around public lanes and gardens so it works either way.

### Can you fly a drone in Kyoto?

Not over the city, temples or parks. Only on private land with the owner’s consent — for example a ryokan or wedding venue outside the centre — and with an MLIT approval that takes about ten business days.

### When should we book for autumn leaves?

By July for the last two weeks of November. Hotels and kimono shops fill early too. If your dates are flexible, the first days of December are calmer and the colour often holds.

### How do we contact you from China?

Chinese-speaking clients reach us on WeChat, where we confirm the plan, the kimono booking and the meeting point; a Mandarin-speaking assistant can join on the day.
