## In short

An autumn leaves photoshoot in Nikko costs $260 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within three days. In mid to late October we shoot above Irohazaka or at Lake Chuzenji, starting before 08:00 to beat the traffic; in early November we move down to Shinkyo Bridge in town. A second spot, such as Kanmangafuchi, is added with an extra hour.

Nikko is the one place near Tokyo where the autumn leaves arrive in October, and they arrive in two stages. Up at Lake Chuzenji, about 1,270 m, the colour peaks in mid to late October; down in the shrine town it follows in early November. So the first question for a Nikko autumn shoot is not where but which week — and the answer decides whether you are on the mountain before the traffic or by the river in town.

## How the shoot is planned

For an October date, we leave the town before 07:00 and climb Irohazaka while the road is still moving. At the top, the Akechidaira deck gives the hairpins in red and orange below, with Kegon Falls and the lake beyond; we take the wide portraits there before the ropeway queue builds — that is the 30 minutes. With an extra hour we go on down to the Chuzenji shore, where the wooden former embassy villas and the maples along the water make the closer frames. For an early November date, we stay in town: the vermilion Shinkyo from the road bridge, shaded and even until about 09:00; with an extra hour, the riverside path to the Jizo statues at Kanmangafuchi follows.

## Timing

Senjogahara’s moor turns first, in early October; Irohazaka and Lake Chuzenji usually peak in mid to late October; the town follows in early November. The exact week shifts by about seven days from year to year, so we track the local leaf reports for the fortnight before your date. On October weekends the mountain road can add an hour each way, which is why the session starts at first light. Mornings are around 5–10 °C at the lake; bring a layer.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much is an autumn leaves photoshoot in Nikko?

$260 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within three days. Lake and Irohazaka dates involve transport up the mountain and, if you take it, the Akechidaira ropeway, about ¥1,000 return; those costs are yours. Kimono rental and dressing is $55 per person.

### Can we do it as a day trip from Tokyo?

For the town in early November, yes: a train from Asakusa around 07:00 has you shooting at Shinkyo by about 09:30. For the lake in October, stay a night in Nikko or at Chuzenji — the best of the mountain is before the traffic, and a day trip cannot get there in time.

### Can we include Toshogu in the photos?

The cedar-lined approach and the stone-lantern rows outside the paid area, yes. Inside, tripods are banned and the halls cannot be photographed, and the Yomeimon gate is crowded from opening, so we treat it as a short add-on to a town date rather than the centre of the session.
