Kanazawa’s teahouse districts are usually photographed at dawn, and that is the right call for kimono. For a couple in their own clothes, the other end of the day is better: the Asano River catches the last light, Kazuemachi’s lanterns come on along the bank, and by about 18:00 the coach visitors have left Higashi Chaya to the people who live and dine there.

## How the shoot is planned

We meet at the Nakanohashi footbridge and cross to Kazuemachi, a single row of teahouses facing the water, as its lanterns come on; the narrow Kuragari-zaka steps behind it make a tight, shadowed frame for two. The last fifteen minutes are in Higashi Chaya at blue hour, when the lattice fronts glow from inside and the stone lane is close to empty. Closer frames happen by the river; in the teahouse lanes we keep to walking together and quiet voices. With an extra hour we start earlier at the Hashiba-cho bus stop and walk down to the Asano River embankment, where the grassy bank and the stone Asanogawa Ohashi bridge give open, relaxed frames in the late sun.

## Timing

Sunset in Kanazawa runs from about 16:45 in December to 19:15 in late June, so the start moves with the season. May, October and early November are the most comfortable evenings; the maples by the river turn in November. Summer evenings are humid but long and bright. In winter the session ends in darkness by 17:30 and the lanes can be wet, which makes the lamplight reflect off the stone. Many Higashi Chaya shops close by 17:00 or 18:00, which is why we arrive as they do.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why dusk rather than early morning for a couple shoot?

Morning is emptier, but dusk adds the river light and the lanterns, which suit everyday clothes better than bare wooden fronts. If you would rather have the dawn version, we run the same route in reverse from 07:00.

### Can we include Kenrokuen?

Not at dusk — it closes at 17:00 or 18:00 depending on the season, apart from occasional evening light-ups. Add an extra hour ($150) in the afternoon and we start in the garden before walking to the river.
