## The paperwork is the service

Japan regulates drones closely, and the paperwork is part of what you are paying for. Under the Civil Aeronautics Act, flying over a densely inhabited district — which covers most of central Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka — at night, beyond visual line of sight, within 30 m of third-party people, buildings or vehicles, or over an event needs MLIT approval. Every drone of 100 g or more must be registered and broadcast Remote ID, which ours do.

We apply through MLIT’s DIPS 2.0 system, which asks for at least ten business days before the flight, so please book at least three weeks ahead. We also obtain written consent from the landowner or venue, and file the flight plan before take-off. The 30 m rule concerns third parties: you and the people taking part in the shoot are not counted.

Some places are off limits whatever the paperwork. The Small Unmanned Aircraft Prohibition Act covers the Imperial Palace, the Diet, designated airports, defence facilities and US bases, and many shrines, temples and Tokyo metropolitan parks ban drones. We never promise aerials over city centres, temples, shrines or crowds; we fly over private land, venues that agree, and coast and countryside away from towns.

Flights stop if the wind is above about 5 m/s or it rains. You receive 15 aerial photos and a 30-second film within 7 days.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do you handle MLIT permission?

Yes, it is part of the price. Flights over densely inhabited districts, within 30 m of people or buildings not involved in the shoot, at night or over events need MLIT approval, applied for online through DIPS 2.0 at least ten business days ahead. We also get the landowner’s consent. Book at least three weeks before your date.

### Can you fly over Kyoto’s temples or central Tokyo?

No. Most of central Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka is densely inhabited district; the Imperial Palace area falls under the Small Unmanned Aircraft Prohibition Act; Tokyo’s metropolitan parks ban drones; and nearly every temple and shrine refuses flights. In those cities we fly only over a private venue that agrees to it.

### What if it is too windy?

We do not fly in rain or in wind strong enough to push the drone off its line, which on the Okinawa and Hokkaido coasts is common in the afternoon. We decide on site; if we cannot fly, we move to another day of your stay or refund the service.
