## In short

An elopement photographer in Hakone costs $1,000 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within ten days: the vows at a garden, terrace or chapel you book, and portraits straight after. Getting ready at your ryokan and portraits around Lake Ashi are added at $150 per extra hour. The legal marriage is separate; we photograph the day you plan.

An elopement in Hakone suits couples who want the vows somewhere private and the photographs somewhere that looks like Japan. The private part is easy to find: a ryokan garden, a hotel terrace above Lake Ashi or a small chapel. The public part, the lake and its torii, comes with crowds and a queue, so the vows are kept well away from both: the base thirty minutes covers the vows and the portraits straight after, and the lake is added with extra hours.

## How the shoot is planned

The base thirty minutes is the vows, at the place you have arranged — a ryokan garden with the owner’s agreement, a hotel terrace above the lake, or a chapel — with the photographer working from the side so nothing stands between you, and the portraits right after. With extra hours, the day can open in your room: the dress, the cufflinks, letters if you have written them, a parent on a video call. And after a toast, we can drive to Lake Ashi for more portraits: the cedar-lined Old Tokaido avenue near Moto-Hakone for quiet walking frames, then the lake path north of the Hakone Shrine torii, which gives the gate and the water without joining the queue.

## Timing

Weekday mornings are the quietest time at the lake; an elopement starting at 08:00 has the portraits done before the tour boats fill. October to early November brings gold pampas grass at Sengokuhara and maples from early November, and suits an afternoon timeline with the vows at 14:00 and portraits in the late light. December to February gives the best chance of Fuji over the lake and cold, clear air. Avoid mid-July to August weekends, when the shrine queue is at its longest.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does an elopement photographer in Hakone cost?

$1,000 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within ten days, covering the vows and the portraits right after; getting ready and Lake Ashi are extra hours at $150 each. The venue, any celebrant, flowers and your ryokan are booked by you or your planner. Common additions are hair and make-up ($100) and a Mandarin-speaking assistant ($70) if family join by video or in person.

### Can we say our vows at the Hakone Shrine torii?

Not as a ceremony. The torii is a shared spot where each group gets a minute or two at the front of a queue, and holding the platform for vows would hold the line. Some shrines hold ceremonies for foreign couples through a planner; we can find out what is possible, but the gate itself is for a portrait, not a ceremony.

### Is our Hakone elopement a legal marriage?

Not by itself. Foreign couples can register a marriage at a Japanese municipal office with documents from their embassies, but recognition at home varies, so most couples marry legally at home and hold the vows here. We photograph whichever you choose.
