## In short

A family photoshoot on Miyajima costs $220 for 30 minutes on the waterfront between the ferry pier and Itsukushima Shrine. You receive 15 edited photos within 3 days. We choose the start from the tide table and your children’s naps, keep the route flat for pushchairs, and keep the deer at a respectful distance.

Families who have been to Nara expect Miyajima’s deer to be fed, and they cannot be: feeding is banned here and there are no crackers on sale. That changes the shoot. The deer wander through the background instead of crowding the children, and the half hour can focus on what small children actually enjoy on the island — the ferry, the flat waterfront and, at low tide, crabs and shells on the sand.

## How the shoot is planned

The session can start on the ferry itself: the ten-minute crossing from Miyajimaguchi passes close enough to the torii for a family frame at the rail, and the JR ferry route swings towards it. On the island we walk the flat seafront promenade towards the shrine, stopping where the pine trees and stone lanterns frame the bay. If the tide is out, we go down onto the sand near the torii for ten minutes of children crouching over pools; if it is in, we shoot the family group with the torii floating behind. We finish on the waterfront rather than at the pagoda, whose lane has steps.

## Timing

Morning usually suits families best: the ferries are less crowded before 10:00 and the waterfront has shade from the pines. We look at both the tide table and nap times, then pick whichever tide falls in the good window. Spring and autumn are the kindest seasons. Summer is hot on the open shore, so a July session starts by 08:00. In mid to late November Momijidani fills with visitors, but the waterfront route stays manageable with a pushchair if we start early.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are the Miyajima deer safe around small children?

Generally calmer than Nara’s, since nobody feeds them — but they will snatch food, maps and paper bags. Keep snacks zipped away while we shoot, and let the deer come and go in the background.

### Can we bring a pushchair on the ferry and the island?

Yes. Both ferry lines take pushchairs on board, and the waterfront path from the pier to the shrine is flat and paved. The shrine corridors, the pagoda lane and the ropeway are where it gets awkward, and this route avoids them.

### How much is the Miyajima family photoshoot?

$220 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within 3 days. Ferry fares and the ¥100 visitor tax are paid on the day; young children are exempt from the tax up to an age the city sets, which we confirm for your family.
