A family beach shoot in Okinawa is less about the perfect location than about the time of day: children wilt in the midday heat, sunburn comes quickly, and from June to September the sea holds box jellyfish. So we come to the beach by your resort, late in the afternoon, and let the children play in the netted area while we work around them.

## How the shoot is planned

We start on the hotel lawn or path above the beach, where the pushchair can go, with a family portrait against the sea. Then barefoot onto the sand: a sandcastle, a race to the waterline, a toddler on a parent’s shoulders, while we shoot from low down at their height. The last ten minutes are a walk along the water’s edge as the sun drops, with the children holding hands — often the frame worth printing.

## Timing

In summer, start about 40 minutes before sunset, which falls after 19:00 in June and July, and finish as the sun drops. In October and November, start about 17:20 for an 18:00 sunset; the water is still warm and the beaches are quieter. Winter, at 15–20 °C, is comfortable for small children but often windy and cloudy. Keep the session away from the hottest part of the day and after, not before, a nap.
