## In short

A honeymoon photoshoot in Hakone costs $300 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within three days, in one place: your ryokan room and garden, with the ryokan’s permission, or the Hakone Shrine torii on Lake Ashi before 08:00, ahead of the queue, and the lakeside path beside it. An extra hour ($150) covers both.

Couples come to Hakone for two things that sit 20 minutes apart: a ryokan room with steam rising off a private bath, and the red torii standing in Lake Ashi. A honeymoon session here gives thirty minutes to one of them — robes and morning tea indoors, or the torii before the line grows — and an extra hour covers both, with a change of clothes between. Either way it is timed around the torii queue, which at weekends can run to an hour and a half, rather than around the light.

## How the shoot is planned

The base thirty minutes is one of the two halves below; an extra hour joins them. The photographer arrives as the room is still quiet: the two of you in robes by the window, tea poured, the terrace bath steaming behind — empty, or with you in a robe at its edge, never in it. With the ryokan’s consent we move to the garden and the corridor for a few frames in the light coming through the shoji. You change, and we drive to Moto-Hakone. While the queue on the shrine steps is short, we take your turn on the platform at the torii, with poses agreed on the way; then we walk the lake path to the north for the side-on view of the gate with the water behind, which needs no queue at all.

## Timing

Book a weekday morning and aim to reach the torii before 08:00, when the line is often under 15 minutes; by 10:00 on a summer weekend it is the longest of the year. December to February brings the calmest water and a clear Fuji over the lake on about one morning in three, plus visible steam from the terrace bath. October and early November add the Sengokuhara grass for an afternoon variant, and mid-June to mid-July lines the mountain railway with hydrangeas.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much is a honeymoon photoshoot in Hakone?

$300 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within three days, in one place and one outfit; an extra hour ($150) adds the second place and a change. The photographer travels to your ryokan. Add hair and make-up for $100, or a vertical reel of the morning for $120.

### Can you photograph us in the onsen?

In your room’s private terrace bath or a reserved family bath, with the ryokan’s permission, wearing a robe, a towel wrap or swimwear. Never in a shared bath or its changing room. We ask the ryokan when you book, so you know before you arrive what they allow.

### Can we wear the ryokan yukata at the lake?

Keep it for the room and the garden. Ryokan yukata are loungewear, and wearing one on the lake path or the ship reads as walking outside in pyjamas. For a Japanese look at the torii, book kimono rental ($55 per person, dressed at the nearest studio in Hakone-Yumoto); a dresser at the ryokan is quoted separately on request.
