## In short

Hotel and ryokan photography in Hakone costs $1,000 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos, cropped for your own site and booking platforms, delivered within seven days. We shoot your best-selling room and its bath, empty and running, between check-out and check-in; kaiseki, the shared baths and the exterior are added at $150 per extra hour.

In Hakone a ryokan competes on its baths and its view, and both are hard to photograph well: the bath only looks inviting with steam on it, and the view only exists on the days the weather allows. A shoot here is scheduled between check-out and check-in, when rooms and baths are empty, and built around the room that sells — usually one with a private open-air bath — rather than every room on the floor plan.

## How the shoot is planned

We start as the last guests check out, around 10:00–11:00, with the room you sell most: the bed made, the low table set, the window or terrace framed so the valley, the lake or the garden reads clearly. Its private terrace bath comes next, water running and the steam timed for each frame — that is the base thirty minutes. With extra hours, the rest of the day follows: around 13:00 the kitchen plates the kaiseki course by course in the room where guests eat it, which takes about an hour. The shared baths follow while they are still closed to guests, then the entrance, the garden and the building from the approach road in the last hour before the 15:00 check-in.

## Timing

For steam that shows in a photograph, the cold months are best: December to February, when Fuji is also visible from parts of Hakone on about one morning in three. Mid-June to mid-July gives hydrangeas for exterior shots, and October to November gives pampas grass at Sengokuhara and maples across the valleys. If a property is known for its Fuji view, we can return on a clear morning for that one frame; the forecast decides the day.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does ryokan photography in Hakone cost?

$1,000 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos, cropped for your site and the booking platforms, within seven days. The shot list is agreed beforehand around the room you sell most; more rooms, kaiseki and the exterior are extra hours at $150 each. Aerial views of the building and grounds are a separate property drone booking.

### Can you photograph the open-air bath with people in it?

Only with models you engage, in swimwear or towel wraps, in a bath closed to guests. We never photograph guests in a bath. Most ryokan prefer the bath empty with steam and a yukata and towel set on the edge, which suggests the person without showing one.

### Our ryokan is up a valley with little winter sun. When should we shoot?

Hakone’s valleys around Miyanoshita and Hakone-Yumoto lose direct sun early in winter, so we photograph exteriors first if the sun reaches the building in the morning and keep the interiors for later. Tell us which way the rooms face and we plan the order around it before the day.
