## In short

A kimono photoshoot at Fushimi Inari takes 30 minutes, beginning around sunrise at the Romon gate and covering the Senbon Torii up to the Okusha prayer hall long before the tour groups arrive at about 8:30. It costs from $260 for 15 edited photos within 3 days; the shrine charges no entry fee.

Vermilion torii and a kimono are one of the most recognisable Kyoto pairings, and the shrine never closes, so the only thing between you and an empty tunnel is the hour. A kimono session here stays on the lower mountain — gate, tunnels, inner prayer hall — because the steps above Okusha are uneven and zori are not made for a two-hour climb.

## How the shoot is planned

We meet at JR Inari Station, directly opposite the first great torii, and start with the two-storey Romon gate and its stone foxes — the morning light falls on the hall behind it, so we shoot the gate from the side. Five minutes up, the twin tunnels of the Senbon Torii take most of the session: short bursts with a longer lens to stack the gates into a solid wall of colour, stepping aside whenever someone approaches. At Okusha you can try lifting the Omokaru stone for a lighter frame, and with an extra hour, if the steps feel fine, we continue ten minutes to the candlelit Kumataka-sha by Shin-ike pond before walking back down.

## Timing

Start about half an hour before sunrise: near 6:30 in winter, when the stone lanterns along the path are still lit inside the tunnels, and around 5 in midsummer, when low sun throws stripes through the gaps until seven. Avoid 1–3 January and the early-February Hatsuuma festival. Because the torii look the same all year, this is the dependable kimono location for the weeks when blossom or leaves have not arrived — and in June’s rain the wet vermilion deepens, though stone steps get slippery in zori.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much is a kimono photoshoot at Fushimi Inari?

From $260 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within 3 days. Kimono with dressing is $55 per person; there is no shrine entry fee.

### Where do we change into kimono for a dawn start?

There are few rental shops near the shrine and they open late. Renting at Kyoto Station the afternoon before is the simplest option, or we can quote a dresser at your hotel; from Kyoto Station it is then five minutes on the JR Nara line, local trains only.

### Can we walk to the summit in kimono?

We do not recommend it: the full loop takes two to three hours on uneven steps. If you want the view from Yotsutsuji, bring flat shoes in a bag and change at Okusha.
