Most beach shoots chase the sunset. In Okinawa the reason to come is the colour of the water, and that colour only appears when the sun is high over white sand in shallow water — which makes this one of the few sessions we start mid-morning. Kouri Island has the shallows, the bridge and the beaches within a few minutes of each other.

## How the shoot is planned

We meet at the beach at the island end of Kouri Bridge. The first frames are ankle-deep in the shallows with the bridge running away behind you, shot from slightly above so the water reads as colour rather than glare. The last minutes are portraits in the shade of the rocks at the back of the beach, which is where the softest light on the island is at midday. With an extra hour, we add a five-minute drive to Tinu Beach on the north shore for the heart-shaped rock and a quieter stretch of sand.

## Timing

April to early May and October to November give clear water, calmer seas and fewer people. The rainy season, roughly May to late June, brings grey days; July to September is clear but brutally sunny and the peak of typhoon season. Tide matters as much as month: at a very low tide the shallows turn to exposed rock and weed, so we pick the hour when the water is mid to high. Winter is mild but the water loses some colour under cloud.

### How much is a beach photoshoot in Okinawa?

$240 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within three days. Kouri Island is about 1 h 45 min from Naha by car, so it fits best on the day you drive north; a photographer pick-up from Naha is quoted separately.

### Can we go into the water?

Ankle to knee deep, yes. From June to September the box jellyfish (habu-kurage) is in the water, so outside a netted swimming area we stay in the shallows and you wear water shoes against coral and rock. Do not stand on live coral.

### What should we do about the sun?

Reef-safe sunscreen an hour before, and sunglasses off only for the frame. Skin burns fast at midday from April onwards; avoid strappy tops the day before if you want no tan lines in the photos.
