## In short

A pre-wedding photoshoot in Gion runs 30 minutes from about 6 am, in bridal kimono on the Yasaka Pagoda lane. It costs from $800 for 15 edited photos within 7 days. The full route, with a Western gown at the Shirakawa and Maruyama Park, takes two to three extra hours at $150 each. Hair and makeup start around 4:30 at your hotel.

Gion fits a pre-wedding shoot into one walkable square kilometre — pagoda, stone steps, canal, shrine — so the base half-hour at the pagoda can grow, with extra hours, into a full route with a proper outfit change. What it does not offer is privacy after eight, or permission by default: Yasaka Shrine needs an application, and the private lanes are closed to cameras. The plan below works around both.

## How the shoot is planned

Hair and makeup finish at your hotel by 5:45, and a taxi drops you at the foot of Yasaka-dori. The base half-hour belongs to the kimono on the pagoda lane, where a long train or furisode sleeve reads well against dark wood. With extra hours the route continues to the steps of Ninenzaka, and around seven we change — at a nearby studio or rental shop that opens early by arrangement, or back at a hotel in the area — which takes about 40 minutes with the stylist. The gown goes to the willows and stone bridge of the Shirakawa, then to the pond in Maruyama Park, ending at the lantern stage of Yasaka Shrine if the shrine has approved the application.

## Timing

The start sits around sunrise, so it moves through the year: about 6:15 in winter and 5:15 in summer. The popular seasons are late March to early April, when the Shirakawa and Maruyama Park cherries are out, and mid-November to early December; both should be booked four to six months ahead, and bridal kimono for those weeks soon after. June is quieter and greener but wet — we hold a rain plan using the covered gate and lantern stage at Yasaka Shrine.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a pre-wedding photoshoot in Gion cost?

From $800 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within 7 days; each extra hour for the gown change and the canal is $150. Hair and makeup are $100; bridal kimono and gown rental are paid to the rental house and vary by garment. Any shrine fee is paid to the shrine directly.

### Can we shoot at Yasaka Shrine?

Only with the shrine’s permission, which we apply for when you book; the main hall is never a backdrop during prayers. If permission is refused, the session uses the public streets and Maruyama Park instead, so the date still works.

### Can we do kimono and a Western dress in the same session?

Yes, with extra hours: 30 minutes covers one outfit at one spot, so a change needs two to three more hours at $150 each. Kimono goes first because the pagoda lane needs the earliest light; the gown follows at the canal and park, where a train is easier to manage.

### How do Chinese-speaking couples arrange this?

Through WeChat: we confirm the plan, the stylist and the rental fittings there, and a Mandarin-speaking assistant can join on the day for $70.
