## In short

A proposal photographer at Mt Fuji costs $280 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos — the question, the answer and portraits after. We scout a quiet stretch of the Kawaguchiko or Motosu shore, agree a signal with you, and confirm or move the morning by 21:00 the evening before if Fuji looks clouded.

At dawn on a Fuji lake, a person with a camera is the least suspicious thing on the shore — half the people there are landscape photographers waiting for the light. That makes the lakes one of the easiest places in Japan to hide a proposal photographer in plain sight. The harder part is the mountain: the question is planned for the minutes when the summit is most likely to be clear, with a decision the night before if it will not be.

## How the shoot is planned

You tell your partner it is a sunrise walk — true enough. The photographer is already on the shore with a tripod pointed at the mountain, like everyone else there. You walk to a spot we have marked for you, a few metres from where the view opens, and when the first light reaches the snowcap you give the signal. The photographer shoots the question from a long lens first, then closes in as the answer comes. After a pause that is yours, the rest of the 30 minutes is portraits along the shore while the light is still low, and the ring against the mountain.

## Timing

Book October to February for the best chance of a clear summit, and a weekday if you can: Kawaguchiko’s north shore fills with tour groups by mid-morning at weekends. The quiet minutes are the half hour either side of sunrise, around 06:00–07:00 in November and 06:30–07:30 in January. Lake Motosu, a 30-minute drive west, rarely has more than a few photographers at dawn and suits anyone who would rather have no audience at all.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a proposal photographer at Mt Fuji cost?

$280 for 30 minutes: scouting, the agreed signal, the proposal and portraits after, with 15 edited photos within three days. If you want the moment on video as well, the proposal video is a separate booking with its own filmmaker.

### What if Fuji is hidden on the morning I planned to propose?

We look at the forecast and the lake cameras together and decide by 21:00 the evening before, so you never stand on the shore with the ring and no mountain. If you have a second morning, we move to it; if not, you choose between proposing at the lake anyway or at a covered fallback agreed in advance.

### Can I propose on our ryokan’s terrace with Fuji behind?

Yes, if the ryokan agrees, and it is often the calmest option in deep winter. Tell us the property when you book and we ask them before you plan anything else; some allow a photographer on a shared terrace only before breakfast, and private room terraces depend on the room you have booked.
