## In short

A cherry blossom photoshoot in Gion runs for 30 minutes from about 6 am in late March to early April, at whichever of the Shirakawa canal or Maruyama Park’s weeping cherry is nearer full bloom. It costs from $260 for 15 edited photos within 3 days; an extra hour ($150) covers both. Exact bloom dates shift each year, so we confirm the spot a few days before.

Gion has two cherry scenes a short walk apart and they peak on slightly different days: the trees leaning over the Shirakawa canal, and the single great weeping cherry in Maruyama Park, which usually opens a little earlier. Both are lit at night in season and crowded until late, which is why a blossom session here works best in the empty hour after a light-up night.

## How the shoot is planned

Whichever spot is nearer full bloom gets the base half-hour. Most years that is the weeping cherry: we start beneath it in Maruyama Park at six, while the overnight illumination crowd is gone and before the picnic sheets go down. With an extra hour, we then walk through Yasaka Shrine and along Shijo-dori to the Shirakawa, where the branches hang low enough over the canal to frame a portrait from the Tatsumi Bridge side. Petals collect on the water once the trees pass peak — a good week, not a bad one, for photographs.

## Timing

Kyoto’s cherries usually open in the last week of March and are in full bloom for about a week, falling in early April. The forecast firms up in early to mid-March, so we hold your date and confirm the route then. Light-up evenings run for roughly two weeks; the Shirakawa is at its quietest at dawn the following morning. Weekends in peak week fill fast, and weekday mornings are noticeably calmer.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much is a cherry blossom photoshoot in Gion?

From $260 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within 3 days. Kimono with dressing is $55 per person, and in blossom season it should be booked at the same time as the shoot.

### What if the cherries are not out on our date?

We tell you as soon as the forecast settles in March. If your dates are fixed and early, Maruyama’s weeping cherry is often ahead of the canal trees; if late, petals on the Shirakawa still make blossom photographs.

### Can we shoot the evening light-up instead?

Yes, but expect people in most frames: the Shirakawa is one of the busiest night walks in Kyoto in that week. Dawn gives a clean background; evening gives atmosphere with a crowd.
