## In short

An Osaka cherry blossom photoshoot costs $260 for 30 minutes in the bloom week, usually late March to early April. We start at Nishinomaru Garden’s opening for the keep behind the blossom, or on the Okawa riverbank at sunrise if the forecast shifts. You receive 15 edited photos within 3 days; garden entry is about ¥200.

Osaka blooms two or three days ahead of Kyoto, and its best sakura frame is one Kyoto does not have: a white-and-gold castle keep above a lawn ringed by cherry trees. Nishinomaru Garden is fenced and ticketed, which keeps the picnic crowd out of the background; the free Okawa riverbank is the fallback when the garden queue is long.

## How the shoot is planned

We queue at the Nishinomaru Garden gate about fifteen minutes before it opens, so we are among the first onto the lawn. The opening frames are wide: you small on the grass, blossom on both sides, the keep lit from the east behind you. Then we move to the trees along the inner wall for closer portraits with branches overhead, keeping off the roots and the roped areas. With an extra hour, we then leave the garden for the moat-side path outside Sakuramon gate, where the stone walls give a different backdrop. If the garden queue is impossible or the bloom there has passed, the session moves to Kema Sakuranomiya Park on the Okawa river, where a long avenue of trees lines the water and the light at sunrise comes across the river.

## Timing

Full bloom in Osaka usually falls in late March to early April and lasts about a week; we fix the exact morning from the forecast, which is updated weekly from early in the year. The first weekend of April books out first. In bloom week Nishinomaru Garden also opens in the evening with the keep lit, which suits couples who would rather not start early, though the lawn is busier then. If you arrive in mid-April after the somei-yoshino have fallen, the Osaka Mint’s double-flowered yaezakura are later; their passage has required advance online reservation in recent years.

## Frequently asked questions

### What if the bloom has not started on our date?

We follow the forecast as it firms up. If Osaka is early or late against your date, we move to a free day of your stay at no charge, or shoot the castle and moat without blossom and keep the price.

### Is the garden fee included?

No. The $260 covers the photographer, editing and 15 photos; Nishinomaru Garden entry of about ¥200 per person is paid at the gate. The garden is closed on most Mondays outside sakura season, so we check the calendar for your date.

### Can we bring a picnic sheet for the photos?

A small one, for a few frames. The garden sets its own hanami rules each season, which we check for your date, and on the Okawa riverbank a sheet is fine as long as it is not left behind to hold a spot.

### Can we wear kimono for the sakura shoot?

Yes. Rental shops near the castle and in Shinsaibashi dress you in 30–45 minutes; add kimono rental at $55 per person. Book the dressing slot when you book us, because sakura week fills the shops first.
