## In short

A snow photoshoot in Kanazawa costs $330 for 30 minutes in January or February at Kenrokuen, from its 08:00 winter opening. You receive 15 edited photos within 3 days. Fresh snow is never guaranteed, so the yukitsuri anchor the session either way; if snow falls overnight, an extra hour lets us start at first light on the Higashi Chaya roofs.

Snow in Kanazawa comes in spells and melts between them, so a snow shoot here is planned differently from Hokkaido. The city has a winter frame that works with or without fresh snow: the yukitsuri rope cones over Kenrokuen’s pines, up from November to March. When snow does fall overnight, the order of the morning matters more than anything else, because the teahouse lanes are cleared by mid-morning.

## How the shoot is planned

We meet at Kenrokuen’s Katsurazaka gate for the 08:00 opening and go straight to Kasumigaike pond: the Karasaki pine under its yukitsuri, then the Kotoji lantern with snow on its cap, with a short warm-up stop in the shelter by the gate. With an extra hour the morning starts at the Higashi Chaya entrance around sunrise, about 07:00 in January: if snow fell overnight, the teahouse roofs and the untrodden lane before the shopkeepers sweep it, then a ten-minute taxi to the garden; afterwards we finish at the Ishikawa-mon gate of Kanazawa Castle, across the bridge from the garden, where the white walls and lead-tiled roofs carry snow well.

## Timing

January and February give the best odds of settled snow; we watch the forecast and, if your stay allows, move the session to the morning after a snowfall at no charge. December and March have the yukitsuri but little snow in the city. Days are grey more often than blue on the Sea of Japan coast, which suits skin tones and white roofs. The snow is wet: many streets spray groundwater to melt it, so pavements are slushy rather than icy, and waterproof boots matter more than spikes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What if there is no snow on our date?

The yukitsuri, the straw komo mats on Nagamachi’s walls and the winter light still make it a winter shoot. If you have another morning, we move to it free after a snowfall; if not, you choose to shoot as planned or cancel for a full refund.

### Can we wear kimono in the snow?

Yes, and it is the classic Kanazawa winter frame. Rental shops lend shawls and boots in winter, and we bring an umbrella in a matching colour. Add kimono rental at $55 per person and allow about 30 minutes to dress before we start.

### How much is the Kanazawa snow photoshoot?

$330 for 30 minutes, with a warm-up stop built in, the location chosen on the snow forecast for your date, and 15 edited photos within 3 days. Kenrokuen entry of about ¥320, and any taxi fares, are paid on the day.

### Can we touch the yukitsuri ropes for a photo?

No. Kenrokuen asks visitors to stay on the paths and not touch the ropes or the pines; the cones are rigged by hand each November. The frames work from the path with a longer lens.
