## In short

A night photoshoot in Shinjuku costs from $240 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos, online within 3 days. We shoot Golden Gai around 5:30 pm, before most bars open. With an extra hour ($150) we cross Kabukicho to the Godzilla head on Central Road and finish under the red lanterns of Omoide Yokocho by the tracks.

Shinjuku at night is lanterns and smoke more than screens. The light comes from paper lamps over yakitori grills and from bar signs a metre above your head, so faces glow warm against dark lanes — a different picture from Shibuya’s crossing. The catch is that these alleys are workplaces: many bars refuse photos, and the session is designed around short, polite stops made from the lane ends. The base thirty minutes is Golden Gai; an extra hour adds Kabukicho and Omoide Yokocho.

## How the shoot is planned

Golden Gai comes first because it is only workable early. We enter from the Hanazono Shrine side, where photographs are better tolerated, and shoot along two of the six lanes with a fast lens, skipping any lane with a no-photo sign — that is the base thirty minutes. With an extra hour we go on: ten minutes’ walk west, Central Road runs from the red Kabukicho gate to the Toho building, where Godzilla looks down from the eighth floor; it is loud and bright, so we take a few frames and move on, keeping touts and hosts out of the picture. The last stop is Omoide Yokocho across the tracks, reached through the underpass: grill smoke under red lanterns, photographed lengthways from the lane mouth without pointing into any stall.

## Timing

From November to February it is dark by five, so a 5:30 pm start catches Golden Gai empty and Omoide Yokocho at its smokiest in the cold air. In summer the sky stays light until after seven and the lanes are hot; we start around 7:30 pm and accept that Golden Gai is busier. Weeknights are easier everywhere. On rainy evenings the lanterns reflect on the wet stone, and the covered Omoide lanes keep the camera dry.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much is a Shinjuku night photoshoot?

$240 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos in a private gallery within 3 days, graded for lantern and neon light; an extra hour for Kabukicho and Omoide Yokocho is $150. Drinks or seating charges, if you choose to sit down in a bar, are yours.

### Can we be photographed inside a Golden Gai bar?

Only if the owner agrees, and only before other customers arrive. Some bars welcome it if you order a drink; many say no. Expect a seating charge of roughly ¥500–1,500 per person where one applies.

### Is Kabukicho safe for a photoshoot?

On Central Road in the early evening, yes — it is a busy public street. Touts may approach; a polite no and walking on is enough. We do not go into side streets of host and hostess clubs, and we keep their staff out of frame.
