Elopement in Kyoto

In short

An elopement in Kyoto is a symbolic ceremony — legal marriage is registered separately — photographed for 30 minutes: the vow and the portraits right after. Getting ready and portraits further afield are added at $150 per extra hour. It costs from $1,000 for 15 edited photos within 10 days. Venue, officiant and shrine fees are paid to them directly.

Why here

Why choose Elopement in Kyoto?

An elopement in Kyoto is a ceremony with meaning but not legal force: Japan registers marriages at a municipal office with paperwork from each partner’s embassy, and most couples marry legally at home before or after. That frees the day itself. The vow can happen in the courtyard of a rented machiya townhouse, in a private garden, or at a shrine that accepts foreign couples by application.

How the shoot is planned

How a session in Kyoto is planned

01

The route

The base thirty minutes is the vow in the small courtyard garden of a machiya you have rented for the night, with only the two of you, a celebrant or a friend, and portraits in the house right after. With extra hours we can also cover getting ready in the tatami rooms, and walk or take a taxi to the Kamo River or the canal path of the Philosopher’s Path for portraits in daylight. If the ceremony is at a shrine instead, its staff set the order and where the camera may stand during the ritual; we photograph within those positions and take the portraits outside the precinct.

02

The timing

Allow four to six months for a shrine application and two to three for a machiya in spring or autumn, when rentals fill. Morning ceremonies keep the portrait locations quiet; late-afternoon ones give warmer light on the river. Late March to early April and mid-November to early December are the most requested windows. If the ceremony is on private land outside the centre, aerial photos are possible with the owner’s consent and an MLIT approval filed about ten business days ahead.

FAQ — Elopement in Kyoto

How much does it cost to elope in Kyoto with a photographer?

Photography is from $1,000 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within 10 days; extra hours are $150 each. Machiya rental, any shrine ceremony fee, kimono or gown and an officiant are separate. Hair and makeup are $100; drone coverage at a private venue is $235 with the paperwork included.

Is a Kyoto elopement legally binding?

Not by itself. A legal marriage in Japan is registered at a ward office with documents from your embassies; most couples marry at home instead. The ceremony in Kyoto is symbolic, and we photograph it as the wedding it is to you.

Can we have a Shinto ceremony at a shrine?

Some Kyoto shrines accept foreign couples for a Shinto ceremony by prior application, with a fee and their own rules on photography inside. Others do not. We check availability for your dates before you commit.

Can a temple garden be our ceremony venue?

Rarely. Most temples refuse ceremonies and commercial shoots in their gardens. A rented machiya with its own courtyard, or a ryokan garden, is the reliable way to have a garden setting.
