Tokyo night photoshoot

Tokyo after dark, from blue hour into the neon of Shinjuku, Shibuya or Ginza, lit by shop signs, wet streets and passing trains. Shot handheld with fast lenses, because tripods block Tokyo pavements and stations do not allow them.

The best start is the 20 minutes after sunset, when the sky is still deep blue and the signs are already lit; that is about 19:00 in midsummer and 16:50 in December. From there the 30 minutes stay in one district: Shibuya’s scramble crossing and the backstreets behind Center Gai, Shinjuku’s Kabukicho gate and the lanes of Nishi-Shinjuku, or Ginza’s Chuo-dori. Adding Tokyo Tower, a short train ride away, takes an extra hour ($150).

Night shoots in Tokyo are handheld. Fast lenses and a small light carried by hand replace the tripod, because setting up on a public pavement for a commercial shoot can need a police road-use permit and station staff will stop a tripod on a concourse. Some yokocho alleys, such as Omoide Yokocho, ask visitors not to photograph inside the bars, so we shoot from the lane and keep other drinkers out of the frame.

Rain helps: wet asphalt doubles the neon and umbrellas give an easy prop. Most Tokyo lines run their last trains between about midnight and 00:30, so a late start is fine, but plan the ride back before the session rather than after.

You receive 15 edited photos in a private online gallery within 3 days, graded for night colour rather than daylight.

Frequently asked questions: Tokyo night photoshoot

Can we shoot in Golden Gai or Omoide Yokocho?

From the ends of the lanes, yes; inside, carefully. Many bars post no-photography signs, the alleys are a person wide and the customers did not agree to be in your pictures. We frame the lanterns and the entrance and keep faces of strangers out.

Is Shibuya Sky part of the session?

No. It is a ticketed deck with its own rules — no tripods, bags in lockers, professional shoots by application only — and sunset slots sell out days ahead. If you have tickets, go before or after; we shoot the crossing from street level, which is where it looks busiest anyway.
