The route
We meet at Kenrokuen’s Katsurazaka gate for the 08:00 opening and go straight to Kasumigaike pond: the Karasaki pine under its yukitsuri, then the Kotoji lantern with snow on its cap, with a short warm-up stop in the shelter by the gate. With an extra hour the morning starts at the Higashi Chaya entrance around sunrise, about 07:00 in January: if snow fell overnight, the teahouse roofs and the untrodden lane before the shopkeepers sweep it, then a ten-minute taxi to the garden; afterwards we finish at the Ishikawa-mon gate of Kanazawa Castle, across the bridge from the garden, where the white walls and lead-tiled roofs carry snow well.
