The route
You dress at a shop a few minutes from Higashi Chaya, booked for the earliest slot it offers. The 30 minutes is on the main teahouse street: the long view down the lattice fronts with you in the centre, then doorway portraits, staying clear of the doors themselves since these are working businesses and homes. With extra hours the route continues: five minutes away, Kazuemachi’s teahouses face the Asano River, and the Nakanohashi footbridge gives a quieter frame with water behind; then a ten-minute taxi to Kenrokuen for the two-legged Kotoji lantern at Kasumigaike pond, the Karasaki pine and the paths around the pond, where kimono reads against old trees rather than wood and stone.
