Why here

Why choose Kimono photoshoot in Gion?

Gion is where the kimono photograph most people have in mind actually exists: a sloping lane of wooden machiya with the five-storey Yasaka Pagoda at the top. The catch is the clock. Rental shops open at nine and the lane is full by then, so this session is built around dressing the night before or at your hotel and standing on Yasaka-dori by six.

How the shoot is planned

How a session in Gion is planned

01

The route

We meet at the bottom of Yasaka-dori and spend the base half-hour on the pagoda frame, shooting in short takes because the lane is open to cars. With an extra hour the walk continues: from there it is two minutes to Ninenzaka, where the stone steps give height for full-length shots — we work from the side so early walkers can pass. Sannenzaka follows only if the light is still soft. Then we walk down past Yasaka Shrine’s west gate and along Shijo-dori to the Shirakawa, finishing at the Tatsumi Bridge with willows over the water. We never turn into the signed lanes off Hanamikoji, and if a maiko passes on her way to lessons, the camera goes down.

02

The timing

From October to March we start at 6:15, as first light reaches the upper roofs of the pagoda; in June to August the start moves to 5:15 because the lane is bright by five and hot by eight. Late March to early April adds cherries along the Shirakawa, and mid- to late November brings colour to Kodai-ji and the Higashiyama slopes — book those weeks by early summer. During the Gion Matsuri in July the district is crowded from early morning, especially around 17 July.

FAQ — Kimono photoshoot in Gion

How much is a kimono photoshoot in Gion?

From $260 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos in an online gallery within 3 days; each extra hour for Ninenzaka and the Shirakawa is $150. Kimono rental with dressing adds $55 per person and hair styling with makeup $100. Nothing in this route charges an entry fee.

Where do we get dressed if the shops open at nine?

Three options: a shop near Yasaka Shrine that offers early dressing for a surcharge, renting the afternoon before with next-day return, or a dresser who comes to your hotel, which is quoted separately. We book whichever suits your hotel’s location when you confirm the date.

Can you photograph us with geiko or maiko in the background?

No. We do not photograph geiko or maiko without consent, and we will not wait for one to pass. If meeting a maiko matters to you, it can be arranged through a tea house dinner, where photos are part of the booking.

Is the private-lane ban a problem for this route?

No. Yasaka-dori, Ninenzaka, Shijo-dori and the Shirakawa are public streets. The ban covers the lanes south of Shijo-dori off Hanamikoji, which we leave out entirely.
