The route
Hair and makeup finish at your hotel by 5:45, and a taxi drops you at the foot of Yasaka-dori. The base half-hour belongs to the kimono on the pagoda lane, where a long train or furisode sleeve reads well against dark wood. With extra hours the route continues to the steps of Ninenzaka, and around seven we change — at a nearby studio or rental shop that opens early by arrangement, or back at a hotel in the area — which takes about 40 minutes with the stylist. The gown goes to the willows and stone bridge of the Shirakawa, then to the pond in Maruyama Park, ending at the lantern stage of Yasaka Shrine if the shrine has approved the application.
