The route
The make-up artist knocks about two hours before sunrise. In the gown and suit you go first to the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, where the photographer works the wide reflections while the light is low and the lake is flat; a long coat stays within reach between frames. That is the 30-minute session. With extra hours you then change at the hotel — into kimono, or a lighter second dress — and drive to a second location: the quieter Lake Motosu shore, 30 minutes west, or your hotel’s own garden if it faces the mountain, finishing with close portraits and details, rings and hands, which need no view at all.
