The route
Whichever spot is nearer full bloom gets the base half-hour. Most years that is the weeping cherry: we start beneath it in Maruyama Park at six, while the overnight illumination crowd is gone and before the picnic sheets go down. With an extra hour, we then walk through Yasaka Shrine and along Shijo-dori to the Shirakawa, where the branches hang low enough over the canal to frame a portrait from the Tatsumi Bridge side. Petals collect on the water once the trees pass peak — a good week, not a bad one, for photographs.
