Kimono photoshoot in Asakusa

In short

A kimono photoshoot in Asakusa costs $260 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos, delivered within 3 days — enough for the rental-shop street and Kaminarimon; an extra hour ($150) reaches Nakamise, the pagoda and the main hall. Rental and dressing are an $55-per-person add-on at a shop near Kaminarimon; hair styling is separate. For an empty temple approach we start at dawn with a dresser booked early, otherwise just after the shops open.

Why here

Why choose Kimono photoshoot in Asakusa?

Asakusa is the one Tokyo district where a kimono is not a costume but the local uniform for visitors: the rental shops sit within five minutes of Kaminarimon, so you walk out dressed and are in the first frame within minutes. The catch is time. Shops open around nine and want the kimono back by five or six, while the temple approach is only empty before eight. We plan the session around that gap rather than around the shop’s default slot.

How the shoot is planned

How the shoot runs around Kaminarimon

01

The route

We meet at the rental shop as the obi is tied and take the first frames on the side street outside, where the light is even and nobody is queuing. Kaminarimon comes next — the four-metre lantern from below, then a full-length frame with the thunder god behind you, which is where the base half-hour ends. With an extra hour we walk on: on Nakamise we walk the centre line slowly; before half past eight the painted shutters are still down and show Edo scenes. Through Hozomon, one position gives both the main hall and the 53-metre pagoda. If time remains, we finish on the quieter east side of the grounds by the stone lanterns, out of the main flow.

02

The timing

Two windows work. The first is dawn: the temple grounds never close, the main hall opens at 6 am (6:30 from October to March), and between six and half past seven the approach is nearly empty — this needs an early shop slot, or a dresser at your hotel quoted separately. The second is 9:30 to 11 on a weekday, busier but manageable. Cherry season in late March and early April fills every shop days ahead, and the Sanja Matsuri on the third weekend of May makes kimono sessions impractical. Winter is clear and cold; bring a haori or shawl.

FAQ — Kimono photoshoot in Asakusa

How much is a kimono photoshoot in Asakusa, including the kimono?

The photography is $260 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos. Add $55 per person for rental and dressing, and $100 if you want hair and make-up, so one person with everything is $415. Express 24-hour delivery is another $80 if you leave Japan the next day.

Can we start before the rental shops open?

Yes, but the dressing has to happen first. Some shops take early bookings from around 7 am for an extra fee, which we arrange; a dresser who brings the kimono to your hotel can be quoted separately. Either way we confirm the time in writing, because a late dresser costs you the empty-gate light.

Are tripods or photos inside the main hall allowed?

We shoot handheld throughout, as Senso-ji asks visitors not to use tripods in busy hours. Inside the main hall, photographing the altar is discouraged, so we photograph the hall from outside and beside its steps — never sitting on them.

What colour kimono photographs best at Senso-ji?

The temple is vermilion, so a red kimono disappears into it. Navy, deep green, pale blue, white and lilac stand apart from the gate and the hall; in cherry season, a darker kimono keeps the blossom from washing you out.
