Why here

Why choose Solo travel photoshoot in Fushimi Inari?

Travelling alone, the photographs that go missing are the ones with you in them, and the Senbon Torii are oddly well suited to a single person: each tunnel is just wide enough for one. A solo session here also means company on the mountain at an hour when you might hesitate to go alone — and, with an extra hour, a walk up to where the crowd thins and Kyoto opens up below.

How the shoot is planned

How a session in Fushimi Inari is planned

01

The route

We meet at Inari Station and walk straight through the gate to the tunnels, where most of the 30 minutes are spent: you walking towards the camera, then away, then a pause looking back, all the way up to Okusha. With an extra hour we climb on the quieter path to Shin-ike pond and the candles of Kumataka-sha, where the light is dim and the frames turn calmer, and then the last stretch of steps to Yotsutsuji, with the teahouse and a view west over southern Kyoto. When we finish, you can carry on to the summit or walk down at your own pace.

02

The timing

Meet 20 minutes before sunrise, which ranges from about 4:45 in June to 7:05 in early January. The lower paths are lit by lanterns before dawn, and there are always a few worshippers and runners, so it is not a lonely place. Groups reach the tunnels around 8:30, but by then you are long finished — or, with added time, well above them. In summer the climb is hot from eight; a sunrise start avoids the worst of it.

FAQ — Solo travel photoshoot in Fushimi Inari

How much is a solo photoshoot at Fushimi Inari?

From $195 for 30 minutes and 15 edited photos within 3 days, usually while you are still in Japan. A Mandarin-speaking assistant can join for $70.

Is it safe to go up before sunrise on my own?

Yes. The main route is lit and used by locals at that hour, and you will be with the photographer the whole time. We stay on the main path and do not take side trails in the dark.

I am shy in front of a camera. How does it work?

Most of the session is walking, so the photographs come from movement rather than posing. The photographer gives one simple direction at a time, and at that hour there is hardly anyone around to watch.
