Why here

Why choose Travel film in Nikko?

Nikko sounds as distinctive as it looks — the Daiya River under Shinkyo, gravel under the cedars, a shrine bell carrying through the forest — and a film can keep that where a photograph cannot. The base 30 minutes covers Shinkyo and the cedar approach at a walking pace, handheld and on a gimbal because Toshogu bans tripods, with the ambient sound recorded on the way and mixed under licensed music.

How the shoot is planned

How a session in Nikko is planned

01

The route

The film opens at Shinkyo: a wide shot from the road bridge with the river loud below, then you crossing into frame on the bank. We walk up into the shrine precinct with the gimbal low behind you on the cedar approach, stopping to record the gravel and any bell or drum carrying from the halls; inside the paid area we film only where photography is allowed and never inside the halls. With an extra hour, the film slows down along the river to Kanmangafuchi: water over lava rock, the long row of Jizo, a close shot of the two of you on the path, and the sound of the gorge to close the film.

02

The timing

Film on a weekday from about 08:00, before the coach groups reach Toshogu from 10:00 and before voices fill the sound. Early November gives red maples at Shinkyo and along the river; June’s rain gives mist on the bridge and deep green moss, and soft rain is good for sound. In mid to late October the colour is up at Lake Chuzenji rather than in town, and we can move the film to Kegon Falls and the lakeshore if you stay the night.

FAQ — Travel film in Nikko

How much is a travel film in Nikko?

$430 for 30 minutes of filming, a 30–45 second film with licensed music and a 15-second vertical cut within seven days. Toshogu admission (about ¥1,600 each) is only needed if you want scenes inside the paid area. A photo set is a separate booking with its own photographer.

Can you film inside Toshogu?

In the open courtyards, handheld, where photography is allowed; never inside the halls, and never with a tripod. Larger rigs or anything commercial need the shrine’s permission. We confirm its current rules when you book and keep the film’s weight on the approach and the river, which have no such limits.

Can we add drone shots of the Nikko mountains?

Not over the shrines, temples or town, which ban drones or sit too close to people. Aerial scenes are possible only from private land, such as a Kinugawa or Chuzenji hotel that agrees, with MLIT approval filed ten business days ahead, as the $235 drone add-on.
