The route

For the temple version, you arrive through Kaminarimon on your own after nine; the photographer is already inside, near Hozomon, with a long lens. You stop at the marked spot between the gate and the main hall — we send a photo of it the day before — and the signal is a hand in a pocket. After the answer, the photographer walks over and the rest of the half-hour goes to portraits at the lit pagoda and hall. The river version follows the same pattern on the promenade, with the Skytree behind.

The timing

The temple lighting runs until about 11 pm, and the grounds are at their emptiest between nine and ten on weekdays. The riverside works best for the twenty minutes after sunset; in December that is around 4:50 pm, so a winter riverside proposal can be followed by dinner. Avoid New Year’s week, the Sanja Matsuri weekend in May and the July fireworks evening, all of which pack Asakusa late into the night.

What if it rains on the night?

Light rain is workable at the temple — the lit hall reflects in the wet stone — and we bring clear umbrellas. In heavy rain we move to another evening of your stay at no charge, and tell you by 3 pm so you can change the plan quietly.
