Japan photoshoot in Gion

In short

A Gion photoshoot in your own clothes takes 30 minutes, starting around 7 am on Hanamikoji-dori and ending at the gate of Yasaka Shrine. It costs from $220 for 15 edited photos within 3 days, with no entry fees; an extra hour ($150) continues through Maruyama Park to the Ninenzaka steps. We stay on public streets and never photograph geiko or maiko.

Why here

Why choose Japan photoshoot in Gion?

Not every Kyoto visitor wants to wear kimono, and Gion does not need one to look like Gion. In your own clothes there is no rental shop to wait for, so the session can start at a civilised seven and move at walking pace through the district’s main public streets, with the photographs reading as a record of the trip rather than a costume set.

How the shoot is planned

How a session in Gion is planned

01

The route

We meet at the Shijo-dori end of Hanamikoji and walk it south as a street — candid frames on the move, no posing in the road and no turns into the side lanes. Back on Shijo-dori, we head east to the steps and gate of Yasaka Shrine, where the base half-hour ends. With an extra hour, we cross the precinct to Maruyama Park for a few relaxed portraits by the pond, then take the lane south past the Kodai-ji approach. The last 15 minutes are on Ninenzaka, using the stone steps for height before the shops raise their shutters.

02

The timing

A 7 am start works for most of the year; in July and August we move it to 6 because the slopes are hot by eight. Weekdays outside the peak seasons are the easiest; in the cherry and maple weeks the same route starts at 6 and drops Hanamikoji in favour of the quieter Shirakawa.
